Historic Almont Farmhouse Saved — And Strengthened — Thanks to Quick Thinking and a Smart Solution

According to a local historian, the oldest tree in Almont Township, Michigan — a majestic Sycamore planted in 1837 — stands proudly at 4020 Shoemaker Road. Behind it sits an even older treasure: a farmhouse built in 1836, a quiet witness to nearly two centuries of change.

When local resident and real estate broker Dan Walker purchased the property, it was at risk of being demolished by developers eager to make way for new construction. Determined to preserve the historical home, Dan took on the challenge of restoring it — investing time, care, and resources into bringing it back to life for future generations.

But as the remodel neared completion, Dan discovered a serious issue. Several of the original log floor joists were rotted — a critical structural problem that couldn’t be ignored. Already over budget, Dan feared the repair would cost over $20,000 and potentially stall the entire project.

In a moment of urgency, he reached out to TK Design for help.

To his surprise, instead of the costly delays and complex engineering process he expected, Dan received an engineered solution the very next day. The repair required minimal work, came at a fraction of the expected cost, and — most importantly — allowed the restoration to move forward without missing a beat.

Thanks to quick action and the right expertise, the historic farmhouse will soon be transferred to its new owners — ready to begin its next chapter, standing strong under the shade of Almont’s oldest Sycamore.
